I’ve handpicked this XL Strelitzia Nicolai to bring serious style and impact into your home, without the fuss. It arrives potted and ready to go—because I believe beautiful, bold houseplants should be easy to enjoy.

Add instant impact to your interior with the XL Strelitzia Nicolai, also known as the Bird of Paradise plant—an iconic tropical beauty that brings a bold, architectural feel to any space. With its lush, paddle-shaped leaves and elegant upright growth, this indoor favourite reaches up to 1.2 metres in height, making it the perfect statement houseplant for larger rooms, open-plan living areas, or bright corners in need of a little drama.

Also affectionately known as the Wild Banana Plant, the Strelitzia is a showstopper. It’s loved for its striking silhouette and rich green foliage, offering a truly exotic vibe that evokes memories of holidays in sunnier climes. Styled in our hand-painted large concrete ceramic pot or a natural seagrass belly basket, this impressive plant effortlessly combines modern minimalism with tropical charm. Be sure to view both pot options to choose the one that suits your space best.

This large indoor plant is relatively easy to care for. It enjoys bright, indirect light—ideally near a south- or west-facing window—and appreciates a good soak once the top layer of soil feels dry. With the right conditions, the Bird of Paradise can thrive and grow tall, adding a sophisticated, tropical ambience to your home all year round.

Good to Know:

  • Split leaves are normal. It’s part of the plant’s natural growth habit and helps it withstand wind in the wild.

  • Hand-painted ceramic pots may vary slightly in colour and pattern, making each one unique.

  • Your plant and pot will arrive in separate boxes—simply pop the plant into its new pot and it’s ready to transform your home.

Care

The Bird of Paradise AKA Strelitzia Nicolai requires a sunny spot but it doesn’t like direct sunlight as the leaves could scorch. They like to be kept moist in the Summer so should be watered weekly but don’t let it sit in water. In winter, let the soil at the top dry out in between watering. Brown tips can be caused by over-watering.

Note, It is normal for the leaves to split at the end, this also occurs naturally in the wild. Unlike the Bird of Paradise cut flower, if you are looking for flowers they are unlikely to appear as this plant needs at least 6 hours of sunlight a day to actually bloom.

Strelitzia Nicolai Care Guide

The Strelitzia Nicolai is, without a doubt, one of our favourite plants here at The Little Botanical. With huge glossy leaves, it’s a stunning indoor plant that flourishes with a bit of TLC.

  • This beautiful plant arrived quickly, undamaged and securely packaged. The plant is absolutely beautiful and in perfect healthy condition. The ceramic pot it cane with is quality too. I had been wanting a bird of paradise plant for a while and I'm delighted with it. The plant looks great in my kitchen where it gets lots of light. I have previously ordered a jungle orchid from Little Botanical, which I definitely recommend. It's flourishing and it looks wonderful.
