Caring for Your British-Grown Sarracenia Fly Trap

We’re proud that our Sarracenia plants are grown right here in the UK, supporting British growers and reducing plant miles.

For the healthiest and happiest plant:

  • Place in a bright spot with plenty of direct or bright indirect sunlight.

  • Keep the soil moist at all times using rainwater or distilled water - these plants thrive in damp conditions.

  • Do not feed with fertiliser - let the plant catch its own prey naturally.

  • In winter, expect some pitchers to brown and die back - this is a normal part of its seasonal cycle.

Caring for the Venus Fly Trap

Sarracenia Fly Traps are plants that eat bugs – nature’s clever little pitchers! They’re fascinating to look at and make brilliant bug hunters, but they also need the right care to grow tall and healthy.

How to take care of them in your home:

  1. Water: Keep the soil damp at all times, like a wet sponge. Use rainwater or distilled water, as tap water can harm them. Never let the soil dry out.

  2. Sunlight: Sarracenias love full sun! Place them in a bright, sunny spot – a windowsill or sunny conservatory is perfect.

  3. Food: They’re excellent at catching their own insects. You don’t need to feed them, but if you do, only give them small live bugs that can fit inside the pitchers.

  4. Don’t touch: Avoid poking inside the pitchers, it can damage the plant and reduce its ability to catch food.

  5. Dormancy: In winter, Sarracenias slow down and some pitchers may turn brown. This is normal – just trim away dead leaves and keep them in a bright, cool spot until spring.

  6. No Junk Food: Never feed them anything other than real insects. Human food can make them rot and die early.

How they grow in nature

Sarracenia Fly Trap plants, with their striking tubular pitchers, are a true marvel of evolution. Native to nutrient-poor environments such as bogs and wetlands, these carnivorous plants have developed ingenious adaptations to survive. Their tall, nectar-laced pitchers lure unsuspecting insects, guiding them into a slippery trap where they are digested – providing essential nutrients like nitrogen that are scarce in their natural habitats.

Sarracenia plants also play a vital role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems. By naturally controlling insect populations, they help protect other plant species and contribute to the overall health of their wetland environments. In this way, these beautiful and intriguing carnivores are not only a testament to the incredible diversity of life on Earth but also important guardians of the habitats they call home.
