At The Little Botanical, we’re all about celebrating the joy and beauty that nature brings—and to add another string to our bow – what better way to do that than through fresh flowers. That’s why we teamed up with the wonderfully talented Jane Scott, a floral designer whose love for blooms runs deep and whose creative flair brings our Flowers with Soul range to life. In this heart-warming chat, Jane shares her earliest floral memories, her favourite blooms, and the inspiration behind the colour-packed, joy-filled bouquets you’ll find in this exclusive Little Botanical collection.
Oh my goodness I’ve loved them since I was a tiny tot. I guess my very first memories of flowers are from following my mum around her little back garden. Each flower bed and pot was jam packed with plants, a magical mix of both blooms and veggies. Runner beans growing up tall bamboo canes alongside the most fabulously fragrant Sweet Peas. Tomato plants laden with fruit next to tall blue Delphiniums and dazzling Gladioli.
It was love at first sight! I would stare for ages at all the different petal shapes, patterns and colours. The floral spell is as strong as ever. I still find myself mesmerised by the flowers at the market, in seed catalogues or books and of course the beloved ones in my own garden.
Sweet Peas have got to be my favourite. They were the first flower I grew from seed when I was probably about eight. I distinctly remember being astonished that this most beautifully fragrant and pretty flower could appear from a little brown seed. I’ve no idea which varieties I grew but I do remember the flowers were jewel like in colour and their perfume is unforgettable .
My second fave has got to be Dahlias. My Grandad Baldwin grew them in his garden in Somerset. Each one with its own cane and upturned flowerpot filled with straw on top to catch the earwigs. They have become super fashionable again. They bloom in almost every shade imaginable and I love the way the colours sit together or clash in bouquets. They are all glorious but here are a couple of show stoppers!
Black Narcissus’ is gorgeous with its spiky, deep and moody maroon petals. Perfect for adding drama to a flower bed or vase arrangement.
‘Café au Lait’ is a darling with the most enormous vintage style peachy pink blooms. It’s one of the delightful dinner plate varieties and works beautifully with so many other Summer flowers.
I think bouquets and bunches can take inspiration from so many different sources but the key considerations for me are style, colour and structure.
I really enjoy exploring eclectic styling and believe that flowers should be a lovely surprise making your heart sing. I like to introduce an unexpected bloom or colour into a mix to capture attention and draw the eye in. I love a generous helping of greenery. I believe leaves add their own unique textures and a calming touch to so much of my work.
Colour combinations need consideration and I like to tailor mine to the occasion. I really enjoy exploring adventurous palettes and love the way Mother nature mixes her shades. Often unexpected these combinations are the most wonderful ones. I believe colour mixes can be flamboyant, eclectic and wild or they can be simple, subtle and sophisticated. It all depends on the occasion.
When it comes to structure hand tied bouquets are my ‘go to’. They are a great way to create an informal mixed bunch and they also work so well for more elaborate mixed bouquets. They are very forgiving and mean I can add, take out or move things as I go along.
Clean vases – Whether you’re using a vase, jug or jar make sure its super clean and I recommend using the flower food.
Fresh water – Ideally get your flowers into water as soon as you can. I like to cut 1cm off the stems at a 45 degree angle with nice sharp scissors. This really helps the stems to take up the water.
Location, location, location – It’s best to keep display your flowers somewhere cool. It makes such a difference to how long they last. If you can then keep them away from…
• Bright sunlight
• Radiators
• Draughts
• Fruit
• Pets
Yes I do, every week. I think they absolutely transform a room, although saying that they are usually the leftovers from whatever I’m working on, nothing fancy! Often I’ve just plonked them into jars at the very end of the day. Sometimes it’s just a stem in a bottle. At the moment I’m loving my pink Peony that is just a mass of ruffled petals in an old wine bottle and takes pride of place in the loo. I love having bud vases or up-cycled jam jars dotted around the house. However I do like a bouquet in my favourite vase just inside the front door to welcome us home.
Blimey that really is a tricky one! As you say I LOVE LOVE them all.
If I really have to chose then I think it’s got to be ‘Sunshine & Blooms’ It’s choc a bloc with colour and has that gathered from the garden feel, truly eclectic. I’ve designed it to include single flowers as I love the way you can then ‘see’ and appreciate each bloom within the arrangement.
I think it feels extra special as it was inspired by our favourite flower show which is where the plan was hatched for the fabulous ‘Flowers with Soul’
Well, that was just lovely! In our chat with floral designer Jane Scott, the creative mind behind our Flowers with Soul collection, we’ve all discovered a lifelong love for blooms that first blossomed in her mum’s garden and still inspires her today. Jane shared her favourite flowers (we’re looking at you, sweet peas and dahlias), her tips for keeping bouquets looking their best, and her thoughts on creating arrangements full of texture, colour and charm. It’s clear that every bouquet she designs is bursting with joy, creativity—and plenty of soul. Thanks Jane for your time and we look forward to creating lots of lovely blooms together in the future.
